• 10 Unknown Facts About Flexible Printed Circuit Board Manufacturers

Printed circuit board is one of the most important inventions of this century. It is virtually present in every electronic gadget that you use in your daily life. Though you may have a basic understanding about PCBs but here are some unknown facts that would help you to gain more insight.

    • Brass PCBs: Charles Ducas applied for a printed wire patent during 1920s. With the process of electroplating, he placed an electronic path directly on an insulated surface. The wires were printed on a board where the ink conducted electricity and brass wires were used, as copper wires were not available. Capel Technology Co. Ltd., one of the flexible printed circuit board manufacturers that makes 1-12 layer flex PCB and 4-14 layers Flex-Rigid PCB using copper for a wide variety of products.

    • The green color: A solder mask is used in PCBS to protect the electronic traces at the bottom from dust and moisture. This solder mask used by flexible printed circuit board manufacturers lends the green color to PCBs which is visible through the glass epoxy. However, the solder mask is also available in colors like orange, blue and yellow. The actual color of glass epoxy is green which is still in use. It is believed that the green color was used as a regulation standard by the American military.

    • Australian inventor: Flex PCB was invented by an Australian called Paul Eisler who created the first PCB in 1936 while he was working on a radio set. However, it was not used widely until the 1950s but from then onwards it started gaining popularity.

    • Computer aided design: PCBs are designed with the use of CAD software. It helps to design various parts like the layout and the schematic. The board can be tested with this software to check whether all the traces are connected before the board is physically created.

    • Surface Mount Technology: SMT is a technique which employs automatic machines to affix the components on the circuit board. Previously PCB makers used the through-hole method but now SMT is being used as it had many errors.

    • The white etches: Previously people had no information about the strange white etchings under which the green PCB solder mask lies. The white etches are called silkscreen which identifies components and records the important informations about PCB on the board.

    • Present everywhere: Today you will hardly find any electronic devices without a PCB of some kind, be it flex or rigid. Cell phones, computers, television, microwave, printers all contains PCBs. As the tracers take less space, PCBs have gradually become smaller in size.

    • Used by NASA: Interestingly, travelling to space would not have been possible without PCBs. As it is lightweight and requires less electricity, NASA used it in the rocket called Apollo 11 in the 60s. This rocket was used by the astronauts to land on the moon and then come back safely.

    • Use tracers: In PCBs copper tracers are used instead of wires to transmit energy. This has allowed PCBs to become quite smaller in size because tracers take less space.

    • Can be customized: Flex PCB makers can customize the products according to your specifications. If you want your PCB to be more functional, it is better to choose a custom PCB.

    • Flex PCB makers allow you to create small devices with enormous power and strength.
